January is National Mentoring Month

National Mentoring Month celebrates mentoring and mentors and the positive impact both can have on young lives. Kids with mentors are less likely to: begin using drugs, begin using alcohol, skip school or engage in violence. Be a Mentor!

The Connecticut Mentoring Partnership (CMP), is a program of The Governor's Prevention Partnership established in 1997, is the only organization dedicated solely to providing support and resources to over 300 mentoring programs statewide, including programs in over half of the state's school systems and numerous community-based programs. The Connecticut Mentoring Partnership's core purpose is to ensure positive outcomes for children through mentoring relationships with caring adults.

  • Who Mentored You?: "Some of America's most prominent people discuss important mentors in their lives - family members, teachers, coaches, friends, neighbors - who provided support, showed them the ropes, and helped them become who they are today."
  • National Mentoring Partnership: "... working to expand the world of quality mentoring. MENTOR believes that, with the help and guidance of an adult mentor, each child can discover how to unlock and achieve his or her potential."
  • Corporation for National and Community Service: National Mentoring Month: "National Mentoring Month is an annual, high-profile campaign to draw attention to the need for more volunteer mentors to help America's young people achieve their full potential."
  • Connecticut Mentoring Partnership: "In Connecticut, there are more than 160,000 children (25 percent of Connecticut youth) that have life situations that place them at risk for personal and academic failure. These situations include poverty, inadequate early childhood experiences and preparation for school, family drug use, violence, involvement in the criminal justice system, and lack of access to needed social and mental health services, among others. Children who have ongoing relationships with caring adults are more likely to avoid alcohol or other drugs, stay in school and get good grades, have a better self-image and have better relationships with their families and friends. Many more mentors, especially men and minorities, are needed."
  • Lanterns Mentoring Program: "Provides opportunity for adults in the Andover, Hebron, Marlborough CT community to volunteer their time to make a difference in the lives of young people. Mentors meet with students one hour per week during school hours at Andover Elementary, Hebron Elementary, Elmer Thienes Elementary School, as well as RHAM schools. During this time, the mentor and student can eat lunch, talk, play games, and do crafts or other activities."
  • Creative Mentoring: "... a program of Connecting Generations, supports in-school mentoring programs in New Castle, Kent and Sussex Counties of Delaware. We provide quality training to volunteer in-school mentors as well as help schools design and implement quality in-school mentoring programs."
  • Do Something: "Do Something believes you have the power to make a difference. It is our aim to inspire, support and celebrate a generation of doers: people who see the need to do something, believe in their ability to get it done, and then take action. At DoSomething.org we provide the tools and resources for you to convert your ideas and energy into positive action. Be part of a generation of doers."
  • Boys & Girls Clubs: " In every community, boys and girls are left to find their own recreation and companionship in the streets. An increasing number of children are at home with no adult care or supervision. Young people need to know that someone cares about them. Boys & Girls Clubs offer that and more. Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence. Boys & Girls Clubs are a safe place to learn and grow — all while having fun."
  • MentorNet: "... nonprofit e-mentoring network that positively affects the retention and success of those in engineering, science and mathematics, particularly but not exclusively women and others underrepresented in these fields." "... MentorNet provides highly motivated proteges from many of the world's top colleges and universities with positive, one-on-one, email-based mentoring relationships with mentors from industry, government, and higher education. In addition, the MentorNet Community provides opportunities to connect with others from around the world who are interested in diversifying engineering and science."
