Gram's Pie Crust

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 Cups All Purpose Flour
  • 2/3 Cup shortening
  • 5 to 7 Tablespoons cold water
  • 1 teaspoon salt, if desired

PREPATION TIME: 10 minutes

COOK TIME: 10-12 minutes until golden brown

PRE-HEAT OVEN: 400 degrees

STEP 1: CUT shortening into flour till size of peas

STEP 2: POUR water over mixture a tablespoon at a time

STEP 3: With your hands, push mixture against the sides of bowl until all the mixture is moistened. (Do not over mix)

STEP 4: Separate into 2 balls of dough

STEP 5: Using one ball of dough: Flatten it with your hand and then roll out with rolling pin to just slightly larger than the pie pan's top circumference.

STEP 6: Place rolled out dough ball in the pie pan. NOTE: For a 2 shell pie (a pie covered with a second crust) roll out the second dough ball now and place it over the pie after the filling has been added..

STEP 7: Crimp the dough against the edges of the pie pan to form small ridges around the top of the pan. NOTE: For a 2 shell pie: Wait to crimp the edges until you've topped the pie with the 2nd crust.

STEP 8: If adding fruit or other filling at this time, do so now.

STEP 9: For a 2 shell pie (a pie covered with a second crust), cover the bottom pie shell & filling with the 2nd pie crust now and crimp edges.

STEP 10: Bake

If you are making an "open pie" - that's one using only one pie shell, use the rest of the pie crust for cinnamon twirls!

Gram's Cinnamon Twirls

Cinnamon Twirls are a family favorite that have been shipped up and down the East Coast to family and friends. Made with Gram's Pie Crust, they're down right irresistible!

INGREDIENTS

  • Use Gram's Pie Crust above or any prepared pie crust.
  • Mixture of cinnamon and sugar (amount depends on amount of dough leftover - start with at least 1/2 C.
  • Soft margarine or sweet butter (unsalted)

PREPATION TIME: 10 minutes

COOK TIME: 10-15 minutes until golden brown

PRE-HEAT OVEN: 425 degrees

STEP 1 (for Gram's Pie Crust left over dough): Gather all left-over dough from pies, knead sparingly until its a ball of dough and roll it out

STEP 2: Roll out the dough into a flat oval/rectangle - as far as it goes. (Thin, but not broken)

STEP 3: Spread soft butter or margarine lightly over dough surface

STEP 4: Sprinkle a prepared mixture of cinnamon and sugar thickly over dough surface

STEP 5: Start at any end of oval/rectangle and roll the dough forward onto itself - tight as possible.

STEP 6: When completely rolled, you can brush it with milk to add some crispness, but not needed.

STEP 7: With the seam-side down, cut across the dough to form circles about 1/4 inch thick.

STEP 8: Put twirls down flat and bake 10-15 minute- on ungreased cookie sheet - and bake.
