Parent Place - Fathers

Why a Place Just for Fathers?

Why a Place Just for Fathers?

:: GENERAL PARENTING :: ABOUT BABIES :: TODDLERS TO PRESCHOOL :: CHILD DAYCARE :: EDUCATIONAL INFORMATION :: CREATING SAFETY :: REACH OUT TO HELP A CHILD :: BEST INTERESTS OF THE CHILD :: FATHERS :: ADOPTION :: TOBACCO FREE KIDS ::

Why, when overwhelmingly, the number of single-parents who bear the responsibility of providing the day-to-day care of children are still women. Why, when it is still the woman in the majority of two-parent families who takes responsibility for providing and/or planning for the care of the children? Why, when mothers, employed outside the home or not, are still the parent staying home to care for children who are sick or have vacations, or need to go to the doctor? Why, when it's still mostly mom going to parent-teacher conferences?

Why? Because it is vital to children that both parents are actively involved in and taking responsibility for their care, their health, their education and their safety. Because building trusting relationships with responsible adults is one of the life's most important building blocks any parent can give his or her child - and trusting relationships are built day-by-day, slowly, over time, through small acts and caring moments, through sharing of beliefs and wonderment and through weathering frustrating failures and worrisome nights. Because being part of the child's life, watching the day-by-day successes, failures, bumps and triumphs is the mortar that binds parents and children together as family. Because the ability and affinity to belong to a family, to be responsible to one another, to show affection, regard and respect for members of the family projects outwardly to neighbors and to the community, and to civil behavior beyond the boundaries of the home.

Regardless of whether parents live together, are married or not - every child needs to know his or her father, needs their father to be someone who can care for them, who likes to be with them, who accepts them, who respects them, and who they can hug, talk to, argue with, play with and depend on - someone they are loved by and who they can love.

Why? So someday, we won't need to. So someday, we won't think or behave as if fathers are less important to children's growth or less capable as caretakers. So someday, we'll just think of fathers as parents. So someday, we'll teach children that what matters most is respect and regard for others - and yourself and that gender does not limit the capacity to love and nurture.
