Freedom of the Press
Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freeness of speech. ~ Benjamin Franklin
The First Amendment in a Digital Age: (justicelearning.org): A special taping of Justice Talking at the National Archives in Washington DC. When the founding fathers wrote the First Amendment to guarantee freedom of speech and freedom of the press, they could never have imagined a world where information is disseminated world wide in seconds. What rights and protections do journalists have today? Do bloggers enjoy those same rights and privileges? Should we be able to control the sharing of copyright materials over peer to peer networks?
The Freedom Forum (freedomforum.org): Nonpartisan foundation dedicated to free press, free speech and free spirit for all people. Focuses on three priorities: the Newseum, the First Amendment and newsroom diversity. Funds the operations of the Newseum, an interactive museum of news under construction in Washington, D.C.; the First Amendment Center; and the Diversity Institute. The First Amendment Center and the Diversity Institute are housed in the John Seigenthaler Center at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. Diversity Institute has programs at the University of South Dakota (Vermillion).
National Coalition Against Censorship (ncac.org): NCAC is an alliance of over 40 national non-profit organizations, including literary, artistic, religious, educational, professional, labor and civil liberties groups that strives to create a climate of opinion hospitable to First Amendment freedoms in the broader community.
People for the American Way (pfaw.org): This foundation is committed to defending democracy and bringing the ideals of community, opportunity, diversity, equality and fairness together to form a strong, united voice. A premier source of vital information for policymakers, scholars and activists nationwide.
Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press (rcfp.org): Dedicated to providing free legal help to journalists and news organizations. The News Media and the Law is available on-line.
Freedom to Read Foundation (ftrf.org): Established to promote and defend the first amendment; to foster libraries and institutions wherein every individual's First Amendment freedoms are fulfilled; and to support the right of libraries to include in their collections and make available any work that they may legally acquire.
