In December 2005, Connecticut became the first state in the country to approve public financing for legislative and statewide races. According to the Connecticut Common Cause, "This is one of the most far-reaching campaign finance laws ever passed by a state -- it will give voters a louder voice in their state government and encourage more people of modest means to seek public office."
But this voice is only as strong as the commitment each resident of voting age makes it -- by using your vote as your voice, by making sure your representatives know your beliefs on issues important to you, your children and your community. Don't know what to think? Read your local and state-wide newspapers -- in print or online. Listen to local and national radio shows that provide in-depth news, commentary or interviews of candidates and incumbents. Don't hesitate to speak out -- write, telephone, email or visit your state and national representatives. And most importantly -- Vote in your local elections and primaries.
